Upright Exercise Bikes - Why You Need One Of These

For many people, the prospect of biking outdoors may not be possible for many reasons.  You may want to be spared the hassles of navigating rocky back roads, the dangers of biking in cities and the inconveniences of inclement weather.  This is where the benefits of the upright exercise bikes come into your life.

Two Types, One Preference

Actually, there are two basic types of exercise bikes - recumbent and upright - available in many stores and sites.  While the upright exercise bike looks similar to a regular road bike, the recumbent bike allows the rider to sit against a backrest.  Thus, the legs will be down on for the upright while the legs are in front with the recumbent.

The health benefits between these two types are actually similar in that both offer good doses of cardiovascular exercise.  The differences lie mostly in the position of the user while riding the bike.

On one hand, you may want to consider the ease of use, convenience and comfort provided by the recumbent bike especially when you have back pain.  On the other hand, you will want to avail of the more intense workout provided by upright exercise bikes, not to mention their normal feel.

In the end, however, the choice between the two will boil down to your personal preferences.   Before deciding on which of the two choices you will actually purchase, we suggest testing them out in your local gyms and then determining which one suits your style the best.  Then, you can go online, see what are available and read the reviews before making your final decision.

Three Considerations, One Final Choice

Let's assume that you want an upright exercise bike.  You have three main considerations to think of when choosing from the many brands and models for sale in stores and sites.

  • Goals - Keep in mind that upright exercise bikes are fit for cardiovascular exercises only.  As such, you may want to settle for a more affordable but still good quality bike when you want to add resistance training equipment on the same budget.  Plus, it helps to determine your exercise goals so as to avoid additional features that may not be used in the future - save your money, instead.
  • Features - Standard features are a must on an upright exercise bike.  These features should include various resistance levels and a video console for monitoring exercise measurements like distance, time, speed and number of calories burned.  Again, you may want to hold off on the fancy options like programming choices, automatic adjustments for heart rate zone training purposes, and even a bottle holder.
  • Stability, Durability and Safety - With upright exercise bikes, these three features are non-negotiable for obvious reasons.  Your final choice in an exercise bike must be able to hold your weight and hold its ground while you pedal away.  You have to be able to use it for years to come so as top secure excellent value for money.  More importantly, the parts should be safe to use even with children around with features like enclosed moving parts.

Again, it will all boil down to your personal preferences especially where available space for the equipment, time for using the machine and money for spending on it are concerned.  The most important thing about upright exercise bikes is that you will actually use them!
